High Protein Vegan Tofu Caesar Dressing

    Jump to Recipe

This clever tofu Caesar dressing has a similar bold and sharp flavor just like traditional Caesar dressing, but is made with a secret ingredient: silken tofu. This special type of tofu blends up rich and creamy every time. Add in some oil, hemp hearts, Dijon mustard, capers, and good ol' nooch for a slightly cheesy, vibrant flavor you will not believe is vegan. Plus, it naturally high in protein and contains no tree nuts, so it's a great fit for vegans who can't tolerate tree nuts or anyone who needs more protein their diet!

If you like intense flavors, you probably love classic Caesar salad. It's so iconic with its notoriously bold, vibrant flavor from the egg yolks, anchovies, parmesan cheese, and more. Of course, this also makes it not exactly vegan.

Fortunately, I have several vegan Caesar salad dressing recipes to choose from, including my tahini Caesar dressing and my white bean Caesar dressing. I find that when you remove dairy and eggs from the equation, you actually end up with even more flavor combinations and variations to try.

But truly, silken tofu is truly the star here. If you've never used it to make a dressing before, this is your sign. It is naturally silky smooth and creamy, and blends up like a dream.

This vegan version balances it with hemp hearts, which add a slightly fatty, nutty flavor that reminds me of the real deal. The nutritional yeast gives you the cheesiness you normally get from Parmesan while the capers add a briny sharpness.

It's such a creative alternative that truly works like a charm. You'll love it!

Why you’ll love this Vegan Caesar Dressing with Tofu

    • Naturally high in protein thanks to the tofu and hemp hearts
    • Comes together in a few moments in the blender
    • Relies on super simple ingredients and mostly pantry staples
    • Looks, tastes, and feels like the real thing
    • Made without any tree nuts or dairy to be vegan and allergy-friendly
    • Surprisingly low in fat and calories thanks to the tofu

Ingredients for Dairy-Free Caesar Salad Dressing

Although some recipes call for extra firm tofu, silken tofu is the best bet. You don't need to fuss with pressing or straining it at all, and it has a naturally creamy texture. This is where it really shines!

    • Silken tofu - This is a special type of tofu known for its super soft, ultra creamy consistency. It's also high in protein and adds a lot of richness without the caloric punch of traditional dairy or mayo.
    • Extra virgin olive oil - For a rich, creamy consistency.
    • Dijon mustard - This adds a sharpness and helps bring the dressing together.
    • Fresh lemon juice - For a bright freshness and a nice tangy flavor.
    • Nutritional yeast - This special little powder adds a cheesy taste without any dairy. It really adds depth of flavor and helps the whole dressing taste more authentic.
    • Hemp hearts - These little seeds are high in protein, healthy fats, and more, and make this dressing even creamier and richer.
    • Capers - Capers are salty and briny and add a pop of flavor similar to anchovies (but without the fish). You can even add a little of the caper brine for an even bolder flavor. A little goes a long way, so you don't need much.
    • Salt & black pepper

How to Make Vegan Caesar Salad Dressing with Silken Tofu

Pro tip: Use a blender. You need it to help break up the tofu, plus it helps aerate the dressing to make it extra rich and creamy. You won't get the same consistency making it by hand.

    • To a high-powered blender or food processor, add tofu, oil, mustard, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, capers, salt and black pepper. Blend until smooth and creamy.

    Storing Suggestions

Place the leftover dressing in an airtight container or glass jar. Refrigerate and enjoy within 4-5 days for the best quality. If needed, shake or stir the jar before serving.

Tips for Making the Best Dairy-Free Caesar Dressing

    • Let it rest. Once the creamy dressing is blended together, let it sit. The flavors will start to come together and it will taste even better.
    • Season to taste. This is your homemade dressing so make it your own! Feel free to add some lemon zest for a bolder citrus flavor or a dash or two of vegan Worcestershire sauce for a stronger flavor. You can also add 1-2 cloves of fresh garlic if you want your dressing to bite back.

    How to Serve

Traditional Caesar dressing is served over romaine lettuce, usually with croutons and parmesan cheese.

For this vegan option, you can either stick with that (subbing vegan parmesan cheese, of course), or you can expand your horizons.

I like to use it with this Vegan Caesar Power Bowl Kale Salad since the combo of the protein-rich dressing and lentils genuinely keeps you going for hours. But really, you can use it any time you would normally use regular Caesar dressing.

It's also a great nut-free option for my Vegan Kale Caesar Salad or this Cajun Tofu Caesar Salad.

Try it tossed over pasta for a Caesar Pasta Salad, spooned over roasted sweet potatoes, drizzled over a crispy tofu wrap, and so much more.
